The Hybrid Exploration Robot for Air and Land Deployment.

is composed of two snake-like machines that attach via magnets to a UAV. After being carried to the site by the quadcopter, snake bots can detach themselves, slip through the holes and cracks of a collapsed building, for instance, and slither to their destinations.

The US military is considering the use of exoskeletons like this Sarcos for its soldiers

It was inevitable that funding for these projects by the US Military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) would lead to spin-offs finding their way into private startups. There are now at least another three companies developing exoskeletons for commercial use and the focus is on creating them to help people with spinal injuries. A Swedish company, Ekso Bionics, makes a 20kg titanium and aluminium suit that costs $100,000 a pop, which has helped several crippled individuals walk again for the first time.

A Textbook of Robotics 2: Structure, Control and Operation

A Textbook of Robotics 2: Structure, Control and Operation by M. Shoham

English | October 8, 2012 | ISBN: 1461598907 | 262 pages | PDF | 8 MB

A human being observing a robot in action may feel that it is so independent that no one can predict its actions. Obviously, this is not the case. Robots arendesigned to carry out, with great precision, any programs we design for them. In fact, robots resemble humans, at times, in their ability to carry out extremely complicated activities. These activities are sometimes so complex that people who are unfamiliar with the principles of robot operation may find it difficult to understand the system.

L1is book presents the basics of an exciting new field. It is exciting because it extends our age-old fascination with tools and machines into experimental areas far beyond mere mechanics and because of the many ways it promises to affect our lives. Certainly, it is new, since the development of robots has taken place only in very recent times.
