This robot created by artist and researcher, Patrick Tresset, is a sketcher shaped like an arm that is able to draw portraits of people. It was primarily designed for Tresset’s “New Work” gallery installation which occurred in London in 2011. Another robot by Aldebaran Robotics, this emotional humanoid bot is designed to be able to assess moods, and interact with humans. It was inevitable that funding for these projects by the US Military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) would lead to spin-offs finding their way into private startups. There are now at least another three companies developing exoskeletons for commercial use and the focus is on creating them to help people with spinal injuries. A Swedish company, Ekso Bionics, makes a 20kg titanium and aluminium suit that costs $100,000 a pop, which has helped several crippled individuals walk again for the first time.

Meet Dash and OSHbot: the robot workers who might steal your job

More than 130,000 robots are predicted to be sold by 2017 as hotels and retail outlets start trialling automated staff. Mark Harris meets two of them

Dash and OSHbot are both hard-working employees in demand. Dash serves guests in a Silicon Valley hotel, while OSHbot works as a retail assistant in downtown San Jose, California. Only they’re not people. They are the first of a new breed of mobile, semi-intelligent robots designed to assist customers and work alongside human employees in shops, hotels and hospitals – and perhaps ultimately even replace them.

More-flexible machine learning

Researchers have presented a new way of doing machine learning that enables semantically related concepts to reinforce each other. So, for instance, an object-recognition algorithm would learn to weigh the co-occurrence of the classifications 'dog' and 'Chihuahua' more heavily than it would the co-occurrence of 'dog' and 'cat.'

Silicon Valley is out to disrupt entire industries – because that’s where the big money is to be made. How long before we lose our jobs?

In 1960, IBM realised that its own customers were alarmed by its new data-processing equipment. If these machines really were as clever as advertised, wouldn’t they threaten the jobs of the office managers buying them? In response, IBM came up with a phrase that still expresses what many of us think of as a central technological truth. “Computers,” it assured its clients, “can only do what they are programmed to do.”

Well, not any more. As both Jerry Kaplan and Martin Ford, old Silicon Valley hands, explain in highly readable books that are somewhere between the complementary and the almost entirely overlapping, computers have long outgrown this quaint summation. Instead, they can now work things out for themselves, proceeding by trial and error to develop their own programs according to their needs – in what Ford calls (I don’t think metaphorically) “a process of Darwinian natural selection”. They can also take a scientific interest in the world around them. In 2009, a computer at Cornell University faced with a double pendulum took only a few hours to formulate Newton’s second law of motion – considerably less time than it took Newton.

Mobile robots could help the elderly live fuller lives, experts say

Mobile service robots developed by computer scientists could soon be helping elderly people stay independent and active for longer. The project, which includes artificial intelligence and robotics experts, will include a large-scale evaluation where robots will be deployed within the extra-care homes of LACE Housing Association in the UK, to care homes in Greece and to elderly people's own homes in Poland, for one year.

Babies time their smiles to make their moms smile in return

A team of computer scientists, roboticists and developmental psychologists confirm what most parents already suspect: when babies smile, they do so with a purpose -- to make the person they interact with smile in return.
