Laser oscillators promise to retire quartz crystals


All electronic devices rely on components called oscillators that create precise frequencies used as a kind of clock to determine its rate of operation.

Now, researchers have developed a technique to stabilize the microwave signals in the GHz band using as reference a pair of laser beams, rather than a quartz crystal.

"The electrical crossovers widely used in electronics can work at frequencies not exceeding 50 or 100 GHz. Our new architecture is a hybrid electro-optic gear that stabilizes an electric oscillator common microwave at much higher frequencies in the range of terahertz, or trillions of cycles per second, "explains Li Jiang, the California Institute of Technology.
