Robot Philae mission Rosetta makes historic landing on comet

The Philae robot landed on the surface of comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko, on Wednesday (12) at 14h03 (GMT), about 500 million kilometers away from Earth. The landing was confirmed by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt, Germany. At Twitter, the agency said: "We are in the comet." This is an unprecedented feat in the history of space exploration, which will allow scientists to have more information about the origin of life on Earth.

The Rosetta mission launched a probe into space and a robot in 2004. The spacecraft traveled about 6 billion miles to meet up with comet. Philae The robot is a miniature laboratory that will send data to the scientists of the space agency on Earth, until the end of the mission in December 2015.

After ten years in space, the Rosetta spacecraft, which cost the agency the equivalent of $ 1,6 billion, managed to "catch" the 67P in August and began his flight around the comet to impart its surface and discover the best place for your robot Philae landing. The comet has an irregular shape, similar to a rubber ducky, it became more difficult the mission of the European Space Agency engineers seeking an area and choose the best way to fix the robot on uneven and bumpy surface. Estimated by scientists, the comet orbits the sun at a speed of 65,600 km / hour.
